ABOUT CAROUSEL DESIGN
Carousel Design's two principals, Melanie Murnane & Wayne Mottershead have complementary skills and experience in interiors and lighting design which combine to offer a broad, considered approach to their interior design. RADA trained Melanie worked with the Dutch National Ballet and on various productions throughout the West End ,TV and Film before moving into Interior Design. Wayne's career began in TV where his original & sympathetic approach to lighting gained International recognition. Their combined skills, have made Carousel one of the country's leading interior design practices.
Melanie set up the Carousel interior design company in London in 1996 and has built up an excellent reputation throughout London and the UK as well as a rapidly growing international client base. Her approach to interior design is based on a passion for shape and texture. She has an instinctive feel for the essesnce of a building and works from this to create an interior design that precisely reflects the requirements of the client whilst remaining true to the basic architecture.
Melanie’s influences, and use of diverse materials from glass to suede, steel to silk, are eclectic but her interior design schemes remain structured and classic with an understated sense of luxury and comfort; whether in a period country house in Cheshire, a listed building in Hampstead or a modern apartment in Knightsbridge.
Melanie’s experience in theatre has given her a valuable insight into the use of form and colour, allowing her to experiment in ways that wouldn’t generally have been possible in a busy interior design company, providing an innate confidence and style in the execution of any type of interior design project, residential or commercial. Her colour co-ordination is beyond reproach with a perfect balance of light and shade in every colour scheme.
Melanie treats every project as a new beginning and is adept at accurately interpreting the brief and developing it beyond the client’s expectations. This has contributed to Carousel’s lateral approach to interior design resulting in a combination of elements that often surprise, and always delight.
Wayne joined the Carousel interior design company in 1997 and has helped it to promote a wider understanding and awareness of lighting design, devising sympathetic lighting schemes to compliment Carousel’s diverse range of interior design projects.
Whilst lighting design is Wayne’s speciality, he is accomplished in every aspect of interior design from furniture design to project co-ordination, and backed up by his formal training in art and design, Wayne’s adaptability and firm understanding of structure, architecture and technology means that he is able to tackle any interior design project, period or contemporary, residential or commercial, bringing to each a unique approach that never fails to impress.
“Form and Light are mutually dependent; without one the other barely exists, and it is this relationship between the two that requires a deep and innate understanding of the nature of light, whether natural or artificial, and the way it interacts with different structures and surfaces. Consider structural glass, reflective metallic surfaces or black velvet; each of these has a profound effect on the light it meets and by the same token, each will stand or fall by the way it is presented to the light”. This intrinsic awareness is the basis of Wayne’s approach to lighting design.
